How Do I Order Heating Oil?

Tips to ensure you never run out of your home’s heating fuel this winter.

heating oil Setauket, NYHave you recently moved into a home that has a heating oil tank and oil-fired heating equipment? Is this your first time in an oil-heated home? Every winter, the Swezey Fuel team talks to new homeowners in Setauket and across Suffolk County who have never arranged a heating oil delivery before. We’re committed to making their heating fuel service as simple and worry-free as possible.

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we get about ordering and receiving heating oil.

How much heating oil do I have?

To check your heating oil levels, start by locating your oil tank, typically found in your basement or garage. On top of the tank, you’ll notice a glass or plastic vial known as the tank gauge. This gauge functions like a car’s fuel meter, with markings such as F (Full), ¾, ½, and ¼. A colored float inside the gauge indicates the amount of oil remaining.

The gauge reflects the total capacity of the tank. For instance, if you have a 275-gallon tank and the gauge reads ½, you have approximately 138 gallons of fuel left. When heating oil is delivered, the tank is filled nearly to the top, leaving a small space for air. Consequently, a full 275-gallon tank typically holds about 240 gallons of oil. Rest assured, you’re only billed for the amount of oil delivered — not for the empty space in the tank.

When should I order more heating oil?

If you count on Swezey Fuel for your heating oil deliveries, it’s a good idea to place an order before your tank gauge hits ¼. That way, you won’t have to worry about running out or losing heat. But hey, there’s an even easier option — we can handle your deliveries automatically! (More on that below…)

  1. Make sure your house number is clearly visible. Turn on your outdoor lights.
  2. Unlock any gates or fences to provide easy access to your tank or fill pipe.
  3. Clear a pathway through the snow leading to your home.
  4. Mark your tank or fill pipe with a brightly colored flag or ribbon for better visibility.
