Sayville was first settled in 1761. But it did not have a formal name until 1837, when residents had to choose a name for the hamlet’s post office. A resident suggested Seaville, as the town is along the sea on the south shore of Long Island. Somehow, the clerk made a mistake and recorded the name as Sayville. The name stuck.
The community is busy in the summer, as it is located where vacationers and day-trippers board ferries to Fire Island.
